6 Scientific Reasons Break Ups Suck Worse Than You Think

Yes, as if it’s not bad enough that you’re losing the one person who will remember to inform the singing waiters at Olive Garden that it’s your birthday, it turns out that ending a relationship can actually have other awful, long-lasting effects on your life.

…6.
You Might Be Ruining Your Friends’ Lives Too

As we pointed out in this article, the people around you can influence your behavior in bizarre ways. The choices your friends and family make in their lives, good or bad, end up influencing the decisions you make as well. And it seems that this is even more true when it comes to the ends of relationships: There’s an excellent chance that your breakup is going to somehow cause the breakup of someone else in your circle.

“We need some time apart, now if you’ll excuse me, I have to destroy my friends’ relationships.”
How Bad Can it Be?
When a couple breaks up or divorces, their immediate friends and family are 75 percent more likely to break up as well.

Kind of like how the breakup of the Beatles eventually caused the breakup of Bachman-Turner Overdrive.
On one hand, that’s sort of expected in that humans certainly like to imitate each other (for that is the stuff fads and fashions are made of). But not when it’s something bad, right? After all, when your…

Being Bad at Relationships Is Good for Survival

Though we might want a secure mate, evolution may have favored insecure individuals that are good for human survival.

…People who do well in relationships have what’s called a secure
attachment style. They tend to view the world as a safe place, and their
optimism
allows them to focus on tasks without being bogged down with negative
thoughts. They seek out groups and work well in them….

13 Ways Facebook Ruins Your Relationship

Think privacy is your biggest concern on Facebook?

…1 Your Relationship Status
Here’s an immediate source of controversy contributing to the difficulty of early dating. Ever been here? You like a girl, she likes you. You date, you share a bed, you spend some time together, everything’s going well and splendid. Then, oh no, she asks. “Are we like facebook relationship status ‘together?” You react poorly, (i.e. you don’t change your profile settings) and suddenly, just like that, it’s over. Well, friends, that’s because to modern women, your facebook relationship status is the equivalent of a high school promise ring. It’s a public announcement that you’ve picked someone to stand by. Problem being? You probably don’t want to publicly announce anything of the sort. A good way to avoid this, is by deleting this setting from your profile all together and making some righteous speech to her about how you are a private person and feel it your right to remain secretive even in a “perversely invasive technological age.” Good luck.

12 Ways to Better Organize Your Life

There’s more to spring-cleaning than tossing out stained tees and moldy leftovers. Your mind could use freshening up. Maybe your relationships, too.

…Keep a to-do list. It may sound like a chore, but it can turn out to be a surprising de-stressor. Spend the last ten minutes of the day listing the next day’s assignments, and you won’t worry that you’ve forgotten something. “It puts a period at the end of your day and makes the next morning more productive,” explains Walsh. Lists also help you see how you’re using your time, and if you’re wasting too much of it on tasks that don’t matter….

When an Elephant Charges, Is It Walking or Running?

Although the answer seems obvious, it took a supersize catwalk and a bank of computers to provide fresh data on elephant locomotion and the relationship between body size and energy expenditure.

…Heglund admits that it took a long time to amass the funds and expertise to carry out such a huge experiment. But the study, published February 12 in The Journal of Experimental Biology, provided important size scaling data, and some interesting observations about the way elephants move. Their “exceptional dimensions” make elephants relatively more fragile than smaller animals because of the force exerted on their supportive tissues. But these dimensions also make the elephants’ movements extremely economical, with a mass-specific energy cost one third that of humans and one thirtieth that of mice. But whether they’re walking or running, Heglund says, depends on what end of the elephant you’re looking at. “If you look at their front legs, you might say that qualifies as a run. But if you look at their back legs, you could say they’re just walking,” he says. “It really depends on your definition of run.”…

Woman steals $21,000 to get boyfriend to dump her

Everyone at some point in their lives has tried to think of a clever way to gracefully exit a relationship without actually doing the heavy lifting and breaking up with your girlfriend or boyfriend….but this???

…t know how else to get rid of him. So, she stole his credit card, and over the course of four months withdrew $21,000 in cash. The victim called police after he noticed suspicious transactions on his statements. Police arrested Ignacio after she was identified on security video using a drive-thru bank machine. To her credit, Ignacio didn’t actually spend any of the money. She kept it in a shoebox, which got her off the hook with a paltry $750 fine and probation. Now typically when a woman does something scummy like this, I’d be on the guy’s side. But I’m kind of with Maria here. How can you possibly muster up the courage to break up with a disabled guy? He’s just a lonely dude who got dealt a bad hand in life and wants to find someone to love him for who he is inside. Reports say that the boyfriend wouldn’t leave her when the subject was broached in the past. A simpler solution for Ms. Ignacio? Moving to a…

Time: Google and the Pedophiles

“It doesn’t have the cachet or name recognition of Myspace or Facebook, but in Brazil, Google’s relationship site Orkut boasts a coverage that its more celebrated rivals cannot match.”

…”I think Google’s decision to make the legal procedures go through the
American justice system is a good thing, not because of Brazil but because
of the world,” said Julien Pain, director of the Internet freedom desk at
Reporters Without Borders. “This way, if you make a request to Google in
the
U.S., the request can be supervised by American justice. This kind of
procedure may seem useless in the case of Brazil, which is a democracy and
respects human rights. But it’s crucial when Google has to deal with
repressive regimes. If a Chinese or a Syrian judge asks information about a
dissident or a journalist, it’s important that Google could say no.”…
