‘Cathy’ comic strip to end after 34 years - CNN.com

For 34 years, she has obsessed about food, relationships, work, and her mother — but now Cathy the comic-strip character is about to say goodbye.

…and Wake Me Up When I’m a Size 5 (1985). An early collection from 1982 had a cover showing Cathy on her sofa, surrounded by her TV, snacks, and a teddy bear. The title: Another Saturday Night of Wild and Reckless Abandon. Guisewite began the strip when she started working in the mid-1970s, said Lee Salem, president and editor of Universal Uclick. “Cathy Guisewite would send her mother drawings describing the latest trauma in her life as a single young career woman, and in response, her mother urged her to try her hand at a comic strip,” Salem said in a statement. “The day the submission arrived in our office, we had a contract out to Cathy in return mail. Seven months later, the strip began in newspapers.” It wasn’t an immediate hit, but Cathy steadily gained popularity and eventually appeared in hundreds of newspapers. There are more than 30 Cathy books. “Cathy has held a distinguished place in newspaper comic sections for more than three decades because of Cathy Guisewite’s skillful hand,” said Salem….

Addictive Web use linked to teen depression

Recipe for a Long Life: No Smoking, Lots of Friends

Researchers pooled data from every research paper on on health outcomes and social relationships they could find, involving more than 300,000 people — and found that those with poor social connections had on average 50% higher odds of death in the study’s follow-up period (an average of 7.5 years) than people with more robust social ties.

…To be sure, the direct physical evidence of the health benefits of social support is much more preliminary than the population-level association reported by Holt-Lunstad. But the evidence is mounting, says Uchino, who has written widely on the physiological links between social life and health outcomes. (Uchino did not contribute to the new review in PLoS Medicine, but has collaborated with Holt-Lunstad on other projects and was, once upon a time, also her grad-school adviser.)
We turn to family and friends for obvious tangible support when we’re sick from help preparing meals to keeping track of pills, appointments and insurance forms. And caring about others may also prompt us to take better care of ourselves. “A really good example, of course, is someone who has a child,” Uchino says. That new bond is often the impetus to quit smoking, to drink less or to curb any number of risky pastimes.
But the influence of social ties may be even more powerful than that. Social relationships, it seems, may also…

The Future of Money: Are We Going Cashless?

Most people have a love-hate relationship with the bills and coins in their wallets. On the one hand, paying with cash — once ubiquitous — can be cumbersome in today’s fast-paced environment.

…in most other developed countries.)
A Cashless World

(Jorge Quinteros)
The realistic prospect of an entire country abandoning cash illustrates the direction in which world commerce is headed. A whole host of forces (from government policy to consumer trends) is conspiring to make cash less and less relevant to daily economic life.
In fact, new transaction methods are popping up every day. Cell phone-based payments, for instance, have become widespread overseas in recent years and are now a standard means of paying for just about anything in Japan. The Times Online notes that of Japan’s six competing cashless payment systems, many are built into wireless phones. In total, Japanese consumers are estimated to carry some 120 million cashless payment chips.
In the United States, companies like PayPal are making it easy to make purchases and swap money using only a mobile phone. Rather than trying to replace credit and debit cards, American companies like Square and GoPayment are equipping phones to work with…

39 Women Pen Letter To Pope About Their Sex With Preists

As sex abuse scandals once again rock the Catholic Church, the 39 Italian women who are, or have been, in longtime sentimental and sexual relationships with Catholic priests have penned an open letter to Pope Benedict XVI, denouncing compulsory celibacy as a “torn up shroud.”

…Special to GlobalPostPublished: May 26, 2010 13:44 ETStefania Salomone in her home in northern Rome. Salomone started a website for women who, like her, have had relationships with priests. (Veronica Venturini/GlobalPost)ROME, Italy They are used to secrecy, to hiding their feelings, to waiting in the shadows for their men. But now a group of women who have had intimate relationships with Catholic priests has decided to speak up against celibacy.
As sex abuse scandals once again rock the Catholic Church, the 39 Italian women who are, or have been, in longtime sentimental and sexual relationships with Catholic priests have penned an open letter to Pope Benedict XVI, denouncing compulsory celibacy as a torn up shroud. In the letter, the women describe the closeted lives they lead as companions to priests and ask the pope to consider that, perhaps, their men can only fulfill their priestly duties with their lives fulfilled by marriage.
In order to become effective witnesses to the need for love, they need to…

Could Farmville Leave Facebook?

Zynga, makers of feed-cluttering, endless-status-update-generating agribusiness simulator Farmville, is one of the biggest and most prominent Facebook developers. But that doesn’t mean they get along.

…profit. That’s money that Zynga would have simply kept before the introduction of the credit system, and the company is understandably irked.Chris Dixon terms this the “buyer-supplier hold up.” Zynga depends on Facebook’s network for their business, so if Facebook imposes this kind of tax, the company’s options are pretty limited. But Zynga is at least keeping the window of independence cracked a bit–they’re letting users play FarmVille at Farmville.com, for one thing. It remains to be seen if FarmVille could remain popular without the warm nerdy embrace of Facebook, but it’s not in Facebook’s best interest to let them find out. Facebook wants FarmVille and its dedicated users on its network, looking at ads and submitting data. If Zynga flees, Facebook is worse off. If buyers of traffic (e.g. app makers) fear future hold up, they are less likely to make investments in the platform. The biggest mistake platforms make…

Developers Need Twitter But How Much Does Twitter Need Them?

The importance of the relationship between Twitter and its third-party developers was made clear by the number of people who came to the company’s first developer conference. But developers have voiced concerns about the impact of Twitter’s moves and the one question they’ve been asking–where do we go from here?

…of the traffic for Twitter comes from outside Twitter.com, through third party companies.
The conference comes amid a delicate time in the Twitter-developer relationship. After Twitter this week announced its acquisition of Atebits, owner of iPhone client Tweetie, and the launch of its Twitter Blackberry application, developers who make apps to access tweets have voiced concerns about the impact of Twitter’s moves.
But Evan Williams, chief executive, explained the decisions by saying the company was trying to increase the number of users of Twitter. By creating a Twitter mobile app, which did not exist before, users would more easily find and join Twitter, which will ultimately result in more users for developers, Williams said. He showed a video of a user having a hard time trying to find a Twitter app on the iPhone to illustrate the need.
I know this was a controversial decision to many people because there were other Twitter apps on this platform, Williams said during his keynote speech. There are…

Digg Addiction? A Father Fears Porn, Discovers Digg…

Original, amusing, “personal” piece about father of teen who’s school is fear-mongering (or warning) about internet use/addiction. Father investigates, “discovers” Digg.

…I went into my 15 year old daughter’s computer on the same impulse. She, too, is a great student, so I was wondering what she was up to typing away all the time. I discovered that she is writing fan fiction about a rock band that she likes. She is writing A LOT and getting great reviews from her online writer friends. One of her stories has been read by more than 500 people. She is really good! I haven’t mentioned it to her. I don’t want her to stop. I keep an eye on it, just because I’m curious what topics she will write about. She did a dead-on parody of Grey’s Anatomy. I am thrilled that she is expressing herself this way.
I, by the way, had to talk her into joining Facebook….
