‘Cathy’ comic strip to end after 34 years - CNN.com

For 34 years, she has obsessed about food, relationships, work, and her mother — but now Cathy the comic-strip character is about to say goodbye.

…and Wake Me Up When I’m a Size 5 (1985). An early collection from 1982 had a cover showing Cathy on her sofa, surrounded by her TV, snacks, and a teddy bear. The title: Another Saturday Night of Wild and Reckless Abandon. Guisewite began the strip when she started working in the mid-1970s, said Lee Salem, president and editor of Universal Uclick. “Cathy Guisewite would send her mother drawings describing the latest trauma in her life as a single young career woman, and in response, her mother urged her to try her hand at a comic strip,” Salem said in a statement. “The day the submission arrived in our office, we had a contract out to Cathy in return mail. Seven months later, the strip began in newspapers.” It wasn’t an immediate hit, but Cathy steadily gained popularity and eventually appeared in hundreds of newspapers. There are more than 30 Cathy books. “Cathy has held a distinguished place in newspaper comic sections for more than three decades because of Cathy Guisewite’s skillful hand,” said Salem….

LA police teach Marines how to train Afghan police

The Marines hope that learning to work like a cop on a beat will help them better track the Taliban, build relationships with Afghans leery of foreign troops and make them better teachers as they try to professionalize an Afghan police force beset by corruption. The troops believe they can learn valuable lessons from the LAPD,

…Siebenaler said many recruits tested positive for drugs, arriving to work high on hashish if they came at all. Supervisors were believed to be skimming money off their officers’ measly salaries. One force had men from two tribes who could barely stand each other….

The Mother Load: Putting Others First

Motherhood is not a relationship of emotional equals.

…My Mom raised five children and she is Catholic. So, we were a handful for all the expected reasons. My brother was killed by a drunk driver when he was twenty. My sister, and best friend, died of a congenital disease just before she turned forty.

We used to give Mom a hard time because she was always cleaning. When we arrived for my brother’s funeral, she could not put down her sponge. Now, we know that that disorder has a name, but, back then we ridiculed her for what she was doing.

Now Mom is 75 and we pay to have her home cleaned. She wants to do it, but, bless her she now knows that it isn’t important that she does it, just that it gets done.

Now, she is the caretaker of all of her bridge friends that are slipping into dementia. She doesn’t talk about it much, but their lives are terrifying and she worries about them all the time.

My Mom is the strongest person that I know and I am ever so sorry that I made light of her silly compulsions.

If my boys try that crap with me, I will remind them of…

15 Yr Old Student Got $1500 Hush Money After Boning Teacher

A former Helper Junior High School teacher charged with having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old male student paid her victim between $1,400 and $1,500 after the encounters, court documents allege.

…Andreini on July 3, according to the statement.
Andreini, 28, was charged Monday in 7th Distirct Court with three counts of third-degree felony unlawful sexual activity with a minor. Her first court appearance is scheduled for Sept.28 before Judge Douglas Thomas in Price. If convicted, Andreini faces up to five years in prison on each count.
Last week, Helper police announced Andreini was under investigation for sexual activity with a boy who recently completed ninth grade at Helper Junior High School.
Another teacher at Helper Junior High School is also accused of sexual misconduct with a student in a case unrelated to Andreini’s, police said. Charges against that teacher are still being screened, said Carbon County Attorney Gene Strate. He said it’s possible the other teacher will not be charged.
Robert Cox, special programs director for the Carbon County School District, told The Salt Lake Tribune earlier this week that Andreini was hired as a special education teacher in the fall of 2006.

But If We Started Dating It Would Ruin Our Friendship…

I really like you.

…I really like you. I do. You’re so nice, and sweet, and you listen to all my problems and respond with the appropriate compliments. But, well, I don’t really see a relationship in our future. It would be terrible if we let sex destroy this great friendship we have where I get everything I want and you get nothing you want. Don’t you think?

I knew you would understand. You always do.

We’re so perfect as friends, you know? I can tell you anything, and you know you can always come to me anytime you need to hear me bitch about work or how ugly I feel. You wouldn’t want to ruin a friendship like that just so you could be my boyfriend, and have me look at you with desire and longing in my eyes, if only once would you? Of course not. Well, if we started dating, it would only complicate this wonderful setup I’ve got going here.

It’s just you’re like my best friend, and I would hate for something you desperately want to change that. I mean, sure, we could go on some dates, maybe mess around a little and finally…

Internet addiction can harm real relationships

“Technology can be seductive because it provides an instant reward - a text message from a friend, success in a video game or stimulating news on a Web site - that is not necessarily harmful…”

…But mental health experts say an addiction can form - just as with gambling - when people keep seeking that intermittent, unpredictable reward.
“The fact that it is unpredictable is what compels the brain to keep checking over and over and over,” said Dr. David Greenfield, assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.
“When people are afraid of not having their PDA or a phone with them, then it’s addictive,” Greenfield said.
Still, the question is: When does an addiction to technology become a problem?
Human contact suffers
Dr. Kimberly Young, founder and director of the Center for Internet Addiction Recovery of Bradford, Pa., said it depends on individual circumstances.
“It’s not a time limit,” said Young, who has been studying Internet addiction since 1994. “You can’t diagnose alcoholism by how much someone drinks. ”
Also, she said, “it’s a generational thing. Go interview a 15-year-old, a 45-year-old and a 75-year-old, and you’ll have different views of…

Woman steals $21,000 to get boyfriend to dump her

Everyone at some point in their lives has tried to think of a clever way to gracefully exit a relationship without actually doing the heavy lifting and breaking up with your girlfriend or boyfriend….but this???

…t know how else to get rid of him. So, she stole his credit card, and over the course of four months withdrew $21,000 in cash. The victim called police after he noticed suspicious transactions on his statements. Police arrested Ignacio after she was identified on security video using a drive-thru bank machine. To her credit, Ignacio didn’t actually spend any of the money. She kept it in a shoebox, which got her off the hook with a paltry $750 fine and probation. Now typically when a woman does something scummy like this, I’d be on the guy’s side. But I’m kind of with Maria here. How can you possibly muster up the courage to break up with a disabled guy? He’s just a lonely dude who got dealt a bad hand in life and wants to find someone to love him for who he is inside. Reports say that the boyfriend wouldn’t leave her when the subject was broached in the past. A simpler solution for Ms. Ignacio? Moving to a…
