…Do people care less
about global warming during recessions? University of California economists Matthew Kahn and Matthew Kotchen have a new paper
that uses three interesting measurements to suss out the relationship between “Environmental Concern and the Business Cycle.”
Here’s what they found:

We find that an increase in a state’s unemployment rate
decreases Google searches for “global warming” and increases searches for
“unemployment,” and that the effect differs according to a state’s political
ideology.

From national surveys, we find that an increase in a
state’s unemployment rate is associated with a decrease in the probability that
residents think global warming is happening and reduced support for the U.S to
target policies intended to mitigate global warming.

Finally, in California, we find that an increase in a
county’s unemployment rate is associated with a significant decrease in county
residents choosing the environment as the most important policy issue.

…Regular exercise speeds learning and improves blood flow to the brain, according to a new study led by researchers from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine that is the first to examine these relationships in a non-human primate model. The findings are available in the journal Neuroscience.
While there is ample evidence of the beneficial effects of exercise on cognition in other animal models, such as the rat, it has been unclear whether the same holds true for people, said senior author Judy L. Cameron, Ph.D., a psychiatry professor at Pitt School of Medicine and a senior scientist at the Oregon National Primate Research Center at Oregon Health and Science University. Testing the hypothesis in monkeys can provide information that is more comparable to human physiology.
“We found that monkeys who exercised regularly at an intensity that would improve fitness in middle-aged people learned to do tests of cognitive function faster and had greater blood volume in the brain’s motor cortex than…

CHEW-GOODER-love hate relationship with the grocery store

Trader Joe’s uses produce from foreign countries. Why? And why is this bad for the environment?

…s. My parents in central Florida go for a walk on the beach every weekend. They can see shrimp boats from the shore. Their supermarket seafood counter carries shrimp from Thailand.
I encourage you to voice your own opinions wherever you buy your food. For example, when shoppers spoke up about Bovine Growth Hormone in milk, both Starbucks and Walmart stopped carrying milk with the hormone. So…

15 Things Men Lose to Relationships

Men live two different lives: the single man and the committed man.

…your family and friends all see what a success you are, you’re the go-to guy at the company. Enter your love interest. Oh how quickly things change
Keeping Your Own Schedule

You haven’t had to follow somebody else’s schedule since you were in grade school, but that changes when you get yourself a girlfriend. It’s just not kosher to run around until three in the morning when she’s at home waiting for you, and skipping dinner won’t work either. Get used to a bit more structured schedule than what you’re used to.
No Drama, No Arguments

The only arguments you might have single are probably with your best friend over which movie Monica Bellucci hottest in, or what beer tastes better. That’s not how life in a relationship is. There are fights all the time, and they’re usually over nothing.
Having Money

This is a no-brainer. We may live in a modern society, but let’s face it, some things just don’t change. Men have more money when they’re single, it’s a fact, that’s all…

Super Conservative Mayor In Gay Relationship With Illegal

The mayor of San Angelo, Texas, J.W. Lown, abruptly announced his resignation just days before he was to be sworn in for his fourth term as mayor

…What is San Angelo competing against. It’s not a large city like Houston or Dallas. I do believe Connelly’s article was a little narrow minded. I have lived in San Angelo for quite awhile. I have seen the same tolerance towards the gay community then I have anywhere else in Texas, California, and Florida. People have this thing stuck in their head “Oh its West Texas, you just aren’t gay in west texas!”. That is a complete understatement. The only thing I wrong with the mayor’s decision is the fact that he decided to write a letter and bail, instead of stand up in person to discuss his actions. San Angelo is a growing city as well. I do believe he will come back, he will be welcomed back as well. As far as being mayor again, I don’t think that will happen. Not to the fact he is gay, just for his action on bailing right before he was sworn….
