Teen Sex Not Always Bad for School Performance

There’s good news for parents who worry that their teenagers’ sex lives are affecting their school performance: A provocative new study has found that teens in committed relationships do no better or worse in school than those who don’t have sex.

…LOS ANGELES There’s good news for parents who worry that their teenagers’ sex lives are affecting their school performance: A provocative new study has found that teens in committed relationships do no better or worse in school than those who don’t have sex.
The same isn’t true for teens who “hook up.” Researchers found that those who have casual flings get lower grades and have more school-related problems compared with those who abstain.
The findings, presented Sunday at a meeting of the American Sociological Association in Atlanta, challenge to some extent assumptions that sexually active teens tend to do poorer in school.
It’s not so much whether a teen has sex that determines academic success, the researchers say, but the type of sexual relationship they’re engaged in. Teens in serious relationships may find social and emotional support in their sex partners, reducing their anxiety and stress levels in life and in school.
“This should give some comfort to parents who may be concerned that their…

6 Scientific Reasons Break Ups Suck Worse Than You Think

Yes, as if it’s not bad enough that you’re losing the one person who will remember to inform the singing waiters at Olive Garden that it’s your birthday, it turns out that ending a relationship can actually have other awful, long-lasting effects on your life.

…6.
You Might Be Ruining Your Friends’ Lives Too

As we pointed out in this article, the people around you can influence your behavior in bizarre ways. The choices your friends and family make in their lives, good or bad, end up influencing the decisions you make as well. And it seems that this is even more true when it comes to the ends of relationships: There’s an excellent chance that your breakup is going to somehow cause the breakup of someone else in your circle.

“We need some time apart, now if you’ll excuse me, I have to destroy my friends’ relationships.”
How Bad Can it Be?
When a couple breaks up or divorces, their immediate friends and family are 75 percent more likely to break up as well.

Kind of like how the breakup of the Beatles eventually caused the breakup of Bachman-Turner Overdrive.
On one hand, that’s sort of expected in that humans certainly like to imitate each other (for that is the stuff fads and fashions are made of). But not when it’s something bad, right? After all, when your…

‘Cathy’ comic strip to end after 34 years - CNN.com

For 34 years, she has obsessed about food, relationships, work, and her mother — but now Cathy the comic-strip character is about to say goodbye.

…and Wake Me Up When I’m a Size 5 (1985). An early collection from 1982 had a cover showing Cathy on her sofa, surrounded by her TV, snacks, and a teddy bear. The title: Another Saturday Night of Wild and Reckless Abandon. Guisewite began the strip when she started working in the mid-1970s, said Lee Salem, president and editor of Universal Uclick. “Cathy Guisewite would send her mother drawings describing the latest trauma in her life as a single young career woman, and in response, her mother urged her to try her hand at a comic strip,” Salem said in a statement. “The day the submission arrived in our office, we had a contract out to Cathy in return mail. Seven months later, the strip began in newspapers.” It wasn’t an immediate hit, but Cathy steadily gained popularity and eventually appeared in hundreds of newspapers. There are more than 30 Cathy books. “Cathy has held a distinguished place in newspaper comic sections for more than three decades because of Cathy Guisewite’s skillful hand,” said Salem….

Mercedes SLS: Really a Next-Gen Dodge Viper?

When we first saw mules for Mercedes-Benz’ SLS coupe, it was clad in a number of Dodge Viper body types.

…All that after refusing to let Chrysler use parts from Mercedes to develop new cars. I harp on the C230 thing a lot. The C230 is the hot hatch Mercedes tried to sell int eh US. It had the same problem the BMW 1-series has now: for a few grand more you can get a car that is more in line with what Americans this the brand is about. Thus the car was a very slow seller
Chrysler wanted to use drive line parts to outfit a next gen FR Neon. The car of course would cost very little would have been a huge hit.. at least with enthusiasts. Mercedes said No. It would cheapen our image Like the 300C and Charger did? Sure. If anything it made people appreciate Mercedes more. Of course finding a way to repackage a car that wasn’t selling, would be seen as a boon by most people in the industry.
Mercedes plundered Chrysler. If the SLS is not proof I’m sure Dr.Z (sounds goofy and villainous at the same time) comes back with, We bought the platform from Chrysler. They were dire straights. Well who put them there to begin…

Hitler Sought ‘Cordial Relations’ with UK

A letter written by Adolf Hitler in 1931 expressing hope for a “truly cordial relationship” between Britain and Germany was sold Tuesday, fetching about $14,400 at an auction.

…In the letter he said: “I hope… that out of this crisis a new readiness will grow up in Britain to submit the past twelve years to a reappraisal. I should be happy, if as a result of this the unhappy war-psychosis could be overcome on such a scale as to permit the realization of the truly cordial relationship between the British and the German peoples so eagerly desired by myself and my movement. “For I believe that the crisis now breaking in on us can only be solved by the closest political collaboration of those nations who see in the re-establishment of a natural European balance of power the first precondition to dealing with those great world problems under which Britain too suffers today.” Andrew Roberts, the British military and political historian, said the letter was a classic example of Hitler trying to lull Western democracies into a state of appeasement. Roberts said Hitler was saying there were underlying interests between Britain and Germany and that he wrote many such letters. “He refers to…

Biblical fragments reunited after centuries

Two parts of an ancient biblical manuscript, separated across centuries and continents, are going on display together for the first time at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. The 1,300-year-old fragments, existed separately and with their relationship unknown.

…”The enemy said: ‘I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil. My lust shall be satisfied upon them, I will draw my sword, my hand shall destroy them,’” reads the song, which appears in the Book of Exodus. “Thou didst blow thy wind, the sea covered them. They sank like lead in the mighty waters.”An exhibit at Israel’s national museum dedicated to the Song of the Sea is now bringing together the two long-separated pieces. From North Carolina … and LondonOne page of the song, known as the Ashkar manuscript, was previously housed in a rare books library at Duke University in North Carolina and was first displayed at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem in 2007.That’s when a photograph of the manuscript in a local newspaper caught the eye of two Israeli paleographers, Mordechay Mishor and Edna Engel, who noticed it resembled a different page of Hebrew writing known as the London manuscript, presently part of the private collection of Stephan Loewentheil of New York.”The uniformity of the letters, the…
