6 Scientific Reasons Break Ups Suck Worse Than You Think

Yes, as if it’s not bad enough that you’re losing the one person who will remember to inform the singing waiters at Olive Garden that it’s your birthday, it turns out that ending a relationship can actually have other awful, long-lasting effects on your life.

…6.
You Might Be Ruining Your Friends’ Lives Too

As we pointed out in this article, the people around you can influence your behavior in bizarre ways. The choices your friends and family make in their lives, good or bad, end up influencing the decisions you make as well. And it seems that this is even more true when it comes to the ends of relationships: There’s an excellent chance that your breakup is going to somehow cause the breakup of someone else in your circle.

“We need some time apart, now if you’ll excuse me, I have to destroy my friends’ relationships.”
How Bad Can it Be?
When a couple breaks up or divorces, their immediate friends and family are 75 percent more likely to break up as well.

Kind of like how the breakup of the Beatles eventually caused the breakup of Bachman-Turner Overdrive.
On one hand, that’s sort of expected in that humans certainly like to imitate each other (for that is the stuff fads and fashions are made of). But not when it’s something bad, right? After all, when your…

Coca-Cola pulls Facebook promotion.

The soft-drinks giant, which has come in for heavy criticism after running a racy Facebook campaign for the Dr Pepper brand, has told the agency that it must stop all advertising work on Coca-Cola brands until a decision is reached on whether to terminate the relationship.

…Lean Mean Fighting Machine and are currently reviewing our relationship with the agency,” said a spokeswoman for Coca-Cola GB.The company was forced to pull a Facebook campaign for its Dr Pepper brand, in which users allowed their Facebook status box to be taken over by the company. Users could choose from three levels of “embarrassingness”, and the contract with Facebook stipulated that all content had to be moderated by Coke before going live. However, the promotion backfired when a Mumsnet user saw her 14-year-old daughter’s Facebook page…

Welcome Social-Relationship Marketing

My love fest with social media was ignited fairly early on (circa 2006) because it was “freep” (free and/ or cheap) and I was working at a small, innovative technology company that needed new ways to brand our company in the marketplace. Then, as social media expanded in scope, I began to work it from a pragmatic, business perspective, reveling in

…radically changing virtually every corporate business practice, with some of the most significant impacts affecting marketing.

Still not convinced that social media is the main act in the next evolution of marketing, then let me remind of the fact that many of the most of the highly capitalized companies today are those in the social media space or companies scrambling to buy assets in this space (sound familiar?). I see nothing to equal it in scope or influence since then (nope not even mobile marketing — as much as I love that segment).

At this point I hope you are convinced that my argument is, at least, plausible (and if you don’t agree, I’d love to hear from you). Then the question becomes, “What now? What works in the real world?”

For me, I say: Welcome, SRM … social-relationship marketing. For the record, I did not coin this phrase as there are a few obscure references to it, but nothing specific. So let me offer a defining set of principles as a stake in the ground for the industry as a way…

Robokiyu, Corpse-Eating Robot

What the Hell is That Thing?
Meet Robokiyu, a rescue robot commissioned by the Tokyo Fire Department. Robokiyu is meant to take over the dangerous task of rescuing people asphyxiated by smoke inhalation inside burning buildings. Japan’s thinking, as always, is that if something’s worth doing, it’s worth building a giant, dangerous, steel automaton with hooked claws to do it instead (though made less intimidating by designing it to look like a retarded Transformer celebrating a touchdown).
Why It’s a Dick Move

Well, officials were so impressed with Robokiyu’s versatility in the many tests it’s performed so far that they’ve branched it out into several other fields … including corpse removal.
Now, handling the dead is a fairly tricky situation. Corpses need to be moved, handled, processed and disposed of. There’s no arguing that, but seeing deceased loved ones taken away is an emotionally wrenching process. Often coroners have to walk the line between doing their job well,…

Suspiciously Prescient Patent from 1979

Kane Kramer, an inventor by trade, came up with a gadget and music distribution service almost eerily similar to the iPod-iTunes relationship that predates it by three decades.

…Kane Kramer, an inventor by trade, came up with a gadget and music distribution service almost eerily similar to the iPod-iTunes relationship that predates it by three decades. The guy predicted details down to DRM and flash memory’s dominance.
Kramer’s device, the IXI, was flash-based, even though flash memory in 1979 only could have held about three minutes of audio, and featured a screen, four-way controls, and was about the size of a cigarette pack. Even weirder, he envisioned the creation and sale of digital music and foresaw all the good and bad that would come from this: No overhead, no inventory, but a great push for independent artists, with the risk of piracy looming large.
He predicted DRM, though he didn’t go into many specifics, and in his one concession to the time, guessed that music would be bought on coin-operated machines placed in high-traffic areas. It’s creepy, really. Last year, Apple even brought him in to testify on their behalf they weren’t at risk of being sued themselves, since his…

If Valentine’s Day Cards Were Honest …

Women always say they want a relationship that is built on honesty. This Valentines Day, give her a card that will prove she doesn’t really mean it.

…”ook at me. im a bitch. none of the articles on cracked are funny blah blah blah bitch bitch bitch. waaaaaaaaaahhhh! you know, you don’t have to come to this website. i’m sure there are other ones to find entertainment from. like wikipedia.”
It’s their job to entertain us. If we didn’t visit this site, it’d be shut down. There’s a standard of quality that we’ve come to expect from Cracked.com content, and the bar is much higher than this re-used crap. Some of you act like we’re supposed to be satisfied with anything that comes out of this site. I got news for you - that’s not how funny is made. You people defending this crap reinforce the idea of it being okay to post outtdated, subpar bullshit….
