Judging the Series Finales: Lost vs. Battlestar Galactica

On the surface, the two series may not look very similar but there are many common themes like: leadership; community; good vs. evil; the levels of ambiguity between good and evil; the power of relationships; despair; hope; destiny; and science vs.

…s finale, Jack Shephard defeated the Man in Black, prevented the Island from being destroyed, and helped his friends escape the Island according to their wishes. Then he died. It was sad, but he died accomplishing his main objective in life: to fix and save people. A bunch of people who had been lost, literally and figuratively, survived to live out their lives. Others eventually found something at the end, whether it was peace, forgiveness, or redemption.
To be honest, I think both finales are about the same in this regard, but I give Lost a slight edge here because Jack Shepard was redeemed on virtually every possible level in the final episode. The redemptions in BSG were OK, but not spectacular.
Death vs. life
Both series dealt with resurrection and life after death in different ways. In BSG, the Cylon Hybrids (including the Final Five) used resurrection as a means of continuation of the species. Resurrection was clearly supposed to be based on science. The Hybrids had endless opportunities, until the…

The Mother Load: Putting Others First

Motherhood is not a relationship of emotional equals.

…My Mom raised five children and she is Catholic. So, we were a handful for all the expected reasons. My brother was killed by a drunk driver when he was twenty. My sister, and best friend, died of a congenital disease just before she turned forty.

We used to give Mom a hard time because she was always cleaning. When we arrived for my brother’s funeral, she could not put down her sponge. Now, we know that that disorder has a name, but, back then we ridiculed her for what she was doing.

Now Mom is 75 and we pay to have her home cleaned. She wants to do it, but, bless her she now knows that it isn’t important that she does it, just that it gets done.

Now, she is the caretaker of all of her bridge friends that are slipping into dementia. She doesn’t talk about it much, but their lives are terrifying and she worries about them all the time.

My Mom is the strongest person that I know and I am ever so sorry that I made light of her silly compulsions.

If my boys try that crap with me, I will remind them of…

In lesbian relationships, is one partner dominant in bed?

Our sexpert tackles your bedroom conundrums.

…and I want to pick up a bottom, I walk in exuding my top energy. I might have a bit of a swagger.” You’ll see the bottoms respond, she says, with shy glances and smiles and so forth. That is, if you are ever lucky enough to observe lesbians in the wild. So, occasionally I lose an erection. What’s the right thing to say when it happens?”I’m terribly sorry. Where is the door?” and then get out as swiftly and quietly as possible. But since it’s probably very late, and I hope you’re at the least very drunk, you’ll need to say something pretty debonair to keep the evening from being a total loss. Psychologist and sex therapist Joel D. Block recommends your immediate insistence that it’s “not her.” Because this sort of mishap is “practically always not personal.” Now, I studied a little recursive categorical syntax back in sex-columnist school, so I can say with some assurance that “practically always not” is just a fancy way of saying “usually is,” but who am I to argue with a guy who’s written four books about…

Ex-Publisher Says News Corp. Official Wanted Her to Lie to Protect Giuliani

In a lawsuit, Judith Regan says that an executive with the company encouraged her to mislead investigators about her relationship with Bernard B. Kerik.

…and that both the Mantle book and the Simpson project were approved by a range of HarperCollins executives. Mr. Murdoch himself, the suit says, signed off on the Simpson book during a dinner with Ms. Regan on Feb. 14, 2006.Most of the complaint explores what Ms. Regan says was an effort to discredit and defame her starting in November 2006, including the release of what she calls false and defamatory statements by company executives to The New York Post, which is owned by the News Corporation, and The New York Times. The assertion that the News Corporation has sought to protect Mr. Giuliani appears in the opening page of the filing. The document later revisits aspects of the assertion without providing a full account of what is alleged to have occurred or how it might be substantiated in court.Ms. Regan says in the suit, though, that when she realized the company had been assembling material with which to justify firing her she called a company lawyer. She says she wanted to confirm that accusations she had…

50 Ways to Be Romantic on the Cheap

Look for little, inexpensive ways to be romantic, and it will pay off for your relationship in innumerable ways….

…Every Tuesday is Finance & Family Day at Zen Habits.
Normally my Family Day articles are about spending time with your kids, but today we’ll talk about another important aspect of families: couples. If you’ve got a significant other, I highly recommend you keep the spark of your relationship alive and find ways to show you appreciate each other, every week and every day, if possible.
Look for little, inexpensive ways to be romantic, and it will pay off for your relationship in innumerable ways.
Why inexpensive? Well, you could rent a limo and take your love to a snooty French restaurant, or whisk him or her off to a trip to the snow-capped Alps, or rent a stadium and have the Three Tenors sing love songs for you while the New York Philharmonic plays in the background. I don’t know about you, but I can’t afford to do that kind of stuff more than a few times a month. The rest of the time, I have to resort to cheaposity.
Before we get into the list, let’s look at a few notes on how to use the list:

Weekly…

10 Best And Worst Places To Get Dumped

It may not be true that an inordinate number of relationships end around Valentine’s Day, but when there’s an entire holiday dedicated to making single people feel bad and, let’s be honest here, most people in relationships feel even worse,…

…5. A truck stopA lot of things end at truck stops: months of sobriety, your drug smuggling business, that pact you had with yourself not to eat hot dogs any more. A relationship should not be among these things. “Sparkling Clean Restrooms!” or no, getting dumped in a land of diesel and Doritos is humiliating. Also, why in the world are you getting dumped at a truck stop? Were you on a road trip that went awry? Your partner just couldn’t take it any more on the way home from the outlet mall and decided to take the half-price Mikasa home and leave you with Bud and Tammy and Ole’ Schnook? Things are looking down for you, friend. Real down.4. A coffee shopNobody goes to a coffee shop to mind their own business. People go to coffee shops to mind everyone else’s business. Which means that if you’re going to end a relationship over a latte (and by this I mean “while drinking a latte” not “dump someone because of a latte”), you are going to have little to no privacy while doing it. Additional problem: throwing a…
