Geek The Beatles: John Lennon’s Assassination Simulations

As part of our series Geek The Beatles, which tracks the continuing influence of one of the most important and technologically innovative bands ever, Wired revisits the timeless relationship between Lennon and Chapman, which has gone viral in movies, TV, comics and music. Turn off your mind and float downstream into the heart of darkness.

…Roll Comics’ The Beatles Experience, Lennon and Chapman live on in a bizarre comics kinship.
Stracyznski’s new charge of re-invigorating Superman, starting with issue No. 700, strips the timeless superhero of villains to battle. Instead, he walks the streets of America to reconnect with humanity. Rather than kicking ass on Lex Luthor, he helps people start their car or catch a clue. In Superman issue No. 701 (at top and above), released in July, the Man of Steel talks down an would-be jumper by invoking the paradox of Lennon’s death and Chapman’s continuing life.
Truth is trickier in The Beatles Experience, published in the ’90s but reissued in graphic novel form in 2009. Densely packed with sociopolitical context and musical history at the beginning of each chapter, The Beatles Experience packs loads of information into its 200-plus pages. It all starts in deep space with Lennon, a 2001: A Space Odyssey-like Star Child who takes physical form on Earth to teach the world about creation, peace and love like a…

US-Israeli relations suffer ‘tectonic rift’

A senior Israeli diplomat has warned that the Jewish state’s relationship with the United States has suffered a “tectonic rift”.

…relations are in a state of tectonic rift in which continents are drifting apart.”Mr Oren’s privately-voiced pessimism stands in stark contrast to public declarations in both Jerusalem and Washington that differences between the two states amount to nothing more than “disagreements” between allies. The ambassador told the Jerusalem Post newspaper last week that US-Israel ties were stronger than many observers believed.Unlike his previous encounter with Mr Obama in March, when he was given a stern dressing-down and denied permission to hold a joint press conference, Mr Netanyahu’s visit to the White House next Tuesday is likely to be cloaked in civility. The Israeli prime minister is being promised photo opportunities with his host in the White House Rose Garden and perhaps even an invitation to Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland. But the show of unity is being seen as a sop to members of Mr Obama’s party who afraid of angering Jewish American voters ahead of November’s midterm elections than as a…

Mercedes SLS: Really a Next-Gen Dodge Viper?

When we first saw mules for Mercedes-Benz’ SLS coupe, it was clad in a number of Dodge Viper body types.

…All that after refusing to let Chrysler use parts from Mercedes to develop new cars. I harp on the C230 thing a lot. The C230 is the hot hatch Mercedes tried to sell int eh US. It had the same problem the BMW 1-series has now: for a few grand more you can get a car that is more in line with what Americans this the brand is about. Thus the car was a very slow seller
Chrysler wanted to use drive line parts to outfit a next gen FR Neon. The car of course would cost very little would have been a huge hit.. at least with enthusiasts. Mercedes said No. It would cheapen our image Like the 300C and Charger did? Sure. If anything it made people appreciate Mercedes more. Of course finding a way to repackage a car that wasn’t selling, would be seen as a boon by most people in the industry.
Mercedes plundered Chrysler. If the SLS is not proof I’m sure Dr.Z (sounds goofy and villainous at the same time) comes back with, We bought the platform from Chrysler. They were dire straights. Well who put them there to begin…

Welcome Social-Relationship Marketing

My love fest with social media was ignited fairly early on (circa 2006) because it was “freep” (free and/ or cheap) and I was working at a small, innovative technology company that needed new ways to brand our company in the marketplace. Then, as social media expanded in scope, I began to work it from a pragmatic, business perspective, reveling in

…radically changing virtually every corporate business practice, with some of the most significant impacts affecting marketing.

Still not convinced that social media is the main act in the next evolution of marketing, then let me remind of the fact that many of the most of the highly capitalized companies today are those in the social media space or companies scrambling to buy assets in this space (sound familiar?). I see nothing to equal it in scope or influence since then (nope not even mobile marketing — as much as I love that segment).

At this point I hope you are convinced that my argument is, at least, plausible (and if you don’t agree, I’d love to hear from you). Then the question becomes, “What now? What works in the real world?”

For me, I say: Welcome, SRM … social-relationship marketing. For the record, I did not coin this phrase as there are a few obscure references to it, but nothing specific. So let me offer a defining set of principles as a stake in the ground for the industry as a way…

It was October 2008

Apple’s content problems actually started in October 2008 when they pulled Endless Walls because of girls in bikini’s and slightly less clothing (no nudity). It was a top 10 paid app for more than a month and was simply a wallpaper sharing app with all kinds of different wallpapers. Customer complaints was the reason given for it being pulled.

Pedophile Uses World of WarCraft to Meet Girls

The 31-year-old Anthony Taylor formed a relationship with the less-than-half-his-age girl, which eventually led to sexual messages and phone calls. The girl’s father found out about the relationship and threatened to kill Anthony, so Anthony did what any self-respecting pedophile would do — he sent her a plane ticket and some money to. .

…I was not “type casting an entire system”. For example, if you were to hear that a judge in Utah let a drunk driver off with a warning after he killed somebody, you could say, “well, I guess Utah is a nice place for drunk drivers” because they were so lenient. It’s obviously not totally fair to do chastise all of Utah, but people aren’t generally nice when they berate you. Yes, I was busting the collective balls of Australia for being as lenient as they were with the guy, but I don’t think I worded it in a way that implied I think all Australians are pedophiles.I also understand that laws are different around the world and I don’t expect everyone to do things the way we do. Far from it, actually. I don’t want to get into politics or make this article any more serious than some people have already taken it, but suffice it to say that I don’t agree with the way America does things either. If you want to bust the United Balls of America, go ahead. I don’t take offense to things that are not directed personally…

Ripe Fruit May Inspire Mosquito Repellents

Fruit flies actually have a love-hate relationship with the smell of fruit. And a new insight into the chemistry of that attraction and repulsion could lead to novel repellents for other insects, researchers say.

…To study the contradiction, Ray and Turner turned to the sensory detectors on the insects’ antennae. “Each antenna is shaped like a strawberry, with hundreds of tiny hairs on it,” Ray says. Inserting minute electrodes into pores on some of the hairs let the researchers check for activity in a neuron bearing the the specialized receptor known to detect CO2. The researchers monitored that activity while releasing both fruit odors and CO2. Two of the fruit odors strongly reduced the neuron’s reaction to CO2.
Those two inhibitor molecules, 1-hexanol and 2,3-butanedione, were quite a surprise, Ray says. “They do not look anything like CO2.”
Yet he and Turner note that earlier studies show that as bananas ripen, concentrations of 1-hexanol increase by 777 percent and 2,3-butanedione by 4,900 percent.
To see whether the inhibitors indeed act on the receptor, “we took the awesome power of fly genetics,” Ray says, and put the receptor protein in a neuron that normally has nothing to do with CO2 detection. Isolated…

BREAKING Letterman Reveals Extortion Plot and Sex With Staff

During tonight’s taping of the CBS’s LATE SHOW David Letterman tells his audience that he was the victim of an extortion attempt and had improper relationship…

…My response to that is, yes I have,” Letterman said. “Would it be embarrassing if it were made public? Perhaps it would — especially for the women. But that’s a decision for them to make if they want to talk about the relationship … what you don’t want is for a guy to say, ‘Oh, I know he had sex with women so I’d like $2 million dollars.’” “I feel like I need to protect these people — I need to certainly protect my family. I hope to protect my job and I don’t plan on saying much more about this particular topic.”Letterman married his longtime girlfriend, Regina Lasko, in March. When asked for comment, a CBS spokesperson said,…

Dating is Competitive Manipulation

V Shares some relationship tips.

…Then I placed them in the corner of my room, on top of my entertainment center. My goal was to make sure that they were visible without making it seem like I was purposely trying to draw attention to them.
That evening, Jack came to pick me up for our date. I did not mention or even glance at the roses. Instead, I quickly informed Jack that I had re-thought my wardrobe and I was going to go slip on a sweater. I went into my bedroom to change.
Now, the hall to my bedroom was decorated with 5 full length mirrors. So from my bedroom, I could spy into my living room. I watched Jack warily eye my roses. I watched him nervously pluck the card from its holder. I watched him put the card back and skitter to the other side of the room. When he was safely in the clear, I came bounding out of my bedroom cheerfully wondering aloud which movie the pair of us should see….
